What Is A Xarelto Lawsuit?

Xarelto is an anticoagulant (blood-thinning drug) that received FDA approval in 2011. Since that time, its sales have been steadily on the rise. Johnson & Johnson’s subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceuticals manufactures Xarelto in the US and Bayer AG markets this medication in Europe.

This is one of the many new blood-thinning drugs that have been launched in the market in recent years. These medicines were designed as alternatives to Warfarin; this is an established blood-thinning drug which has been around since the 1950s. Pradaxa is one of Xarelto’s direct competitors and is manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim. Many of these drugs have now become the subject of growing controversy and a rising number of lawsuits.

Side Effects of Xarelto

This drug was initially approved for people recovering from knee & hip replacement surgeries. The sere coveries involve a greater risk of deep vein thrombosis (development of blood clots in the legs). But over the years, the list of Xarelto’s approved uses has only grown in number.

Patients that have a trial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat) take the medication to reduce the risk of stroke. Those who develop pulmonary embolisms (blood clots in the lungs) are also prescribed Xarelto and doctors prescribe it for a number of other uses too.

Why are Xarelto lawsuits being filed?

Many patients that have suffered side effects Xarelto such as pulmonary embolisms, strokes, deep vein thrombosis and even heart attacks have sued the manufacturers of these drugs. A large percentage of these are product liability lawsuits against Janssen Pharmaceuticals and Johnson & Johnson. Many other blood-thinning drugs’ manufacturers also face similar lawsuits. Patients from across the United States have filed lawsuits against Boehringer Ingelheim as well.

Xarelto Side Effects

While patients file these cases for many different reasons, the most notable one is to recover financial compensation for the injuries they have suffered. The injuries that these patients suffer can require significant long-term health care costs and lengthy hospitalization, as well as a  significant amount of time away from work.
